The store owner is always there (and the store dogs!). The kids working there play all the sports, so they know what they're talking about. And they're especially good at working with beginners and small kids to get them outfitted right, without spending an arm and a leg. They had both new and used equipment to chose from, so could save money on used stuff, or spend a little more on a new helmet because I didn't want to wear someone else's.
