      The City of Lowell Health Department operates under the government of the city of Lowell, Mass., which also operates fire, police, parking, public works, purchasing, and parks and recreation departments. The City of Lowell Health Department protects against environmental hazards, guards against the occurrence of injury-causing situations and responds to disasters. The department administers the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program, which is a federal health, nutrition and prevention program for infants, pregnant women and children under the age of 5. It operates a community health division that provides a public health nurse to manage communicable disease cases.
